Can We Still Trust the FDA?

As a teenager, you may have had constant problems with acne breakouts which had a negative effect on your self-esteem and confidence. Once these hormonally charged years are over and you have found an effective way to reduce the chances of acne flare-ups or recurrences, you may still feel the impact of this skin issue. This is because the scars, spots, and other marks of the acne flare-ups you once had are still noticeable on your face or other parts of your body.

As such, dermatological experts say that curing the condition of acne or preventing their appearance is not enough; acne scars need to be taken care of also so that you won't have to face this problem as well.

For people who are still grappling with acne breakouts and want to minimize and prevent the occurrence of acne scars, below are some useful tips to keep in mind:

Apply Aloe Vera. Aloe Vera sap can be used to treat various conditions including red pimples, burns, and wounds. It is also a natural moisturizer that can help rejuvenate your skin. Applying Aloe Vera sap can effectively hasten the healing process of your acne scars. Simply apply the sap directly on the scars.

Use cold compress. Ice cubes, in particular, will soothe your inflamed skin and reduce the redness. Wrap an ice cube with a clean piece of cloth and hold this right against your acne scars for at least two minutes.

Apply raw honey on acne or pimples. Honey has been effective in treating acne and red pimples. It is a safe, organic antibacterial natural product that can reduce inflammation and soothe the skin at the same time. To get the best results, use raw honey to minimize or get rid of acne scars.

Put lemon juice solution on the affected areas. Lemon juice has bleaching properties and can help to lighten the scars. For the solution, take some fresh lemon juice and combine it with an equal amount of water. Apply this solution directly on these scars. Leave the lemon juice on the scars for about 20 minutes before removing or cleansing it off. Moisturize your skin after washing the juice off to avoid dryness.

Apply cortisone cream. Lastly, if you're looking for an over-the-counter product that can help you minimize and avoid acne scars, start with cortisone creams. This type of cream can help reduce inflammation and at the same time, promote speedy healing of the scars. To make sure that you will buy the right product, particularly one that is safe for your skin, consult your doctor or dermatologist first.

We are entering our yearly celebration of the Month of Ramadan in which we abstain from drinking or eating during the daylight hours. For those who already eat one meal per day, this is merely an adjustment in meal time but the challenge may be lack of water. For maximum benefit, we should choose the best of foods for nutrition and hydrate appropriately. Most people are aware that food serves as our energy and during Ramadan, we may realize that water plays a significant role in our energy as well. So, if you typically need energy drinks or coffee to 'start' your day, this may be an opportunity to make some adjustments and come out of this 30 days with a new energy action plan. Of course, everything mentioned must be adjusted for more hot climates and food intake should be adjusted based on your needs due to your activity level. For those with medical problems and who are taking medications, you should consult with your caregiver for specific recommendations.

In the U.S., we will be averaging 14 hour days of sunlight. Since that leads to later meal times, consideration of how long our meals take to digest is an important consideration. Eating foods such as beef, lamb, chicken and turkey can require digestion times of 8 to 12 hours and potentially longer depending on consistency of meat and preparation method. If you have ever awakened in the morning and you burp and taste or smell the food you ate for dinner, this is a sign that the digestion process is still occurring. We should consider eating navy beans as a protein source which will be digested within 4 to 5 hours and will produce a lasting energy supply. Fruit and or fruit smoothies are excellent ways to break the fast after the call to prayer which should be done after hydration which will be addressed in next paragraph. Protein is the food nutrient that takes the longest period of time to digest, so other foods that are added such as vegetables, pasta or rice may add minimal time to digesting time but not many hours like heavy meats. It is relatively impossible to address every individuals food amount so you will have to base what you eat during Ramadan on what your eating habits and amounts were during your normal actions and make appropriate changes.

Hydration is probably the most important aspect to consider when practicing Ramadan. As previously stated, water in the body is highly tied to energy. As well, after 14 hours of no fluids entering our bodies, hydration is most important to digestion. Our digestive system does not operate well when it is not moisturized. The importance of hydrating prior to eating is twofold. The aforementioned need for the system to be hydrated is one and the other is that we should not drink with or after we eat. Our stomachs produce a very strong acid and if we make it a habit to drink with or after meals, we are diluting our digestive juices which will decrease digestive ability or prolong the digestive process. Most effective would be to drink water with a teaspoon of sea salt in 16 to 20 ounces of water in the morning prior to sunrise along with 32 ounces or more of water without sea salt. This will hydrate more effective than water as a solo intake. Sea salt allows the hydration to penetrate the cells more effectively. This type of hydration will promote the water to stay in our body for longer periods of time. This is improved hydration as well as increasing removal of toxins intracellularly and throughout the body.

Exercise capacity is also a significant consideration. Although, many of us want to continue our activity routine, this should be monitored closely. Exercise routines should be adjusted unless they are done early in the morning with time to hydrate prior to sunrise.
